Are you interested in research or considering getting a PhD?

The Stanford Summer Research Program is a nine-week intensive course from June to August that gives students the opportunity to do research at Stanford, one of the world's leading research institutions. Students in the program will work with world class faculty, state-of-the-art research facilities, and receive personalized mentoring.

This summer research program is also fully funded, including housing, meals, and the cost of round-trip travel, plus a $3600 stipend!

Summer research can be done in one of the following areas: biochemistry, bioengineering, biomedical informatics, biology, biophysics, cancer biology, chemical and systems biology, developmental biology, genetics, immunology, microbiology and immunology, molecular and cellular physiology, neurosciences, stem cell biology and regenerative medicine, and structural biology.

Eligibility Criteria:
  • U.S. citizens, permanent residents or students under DACA
  • Undergraduate students enrolled in 4-year universities in the U.S., Puerto Rico or other U.S. territories
  • Sophomores (with 4 quarters or 3 semesters of college experience), juniors, or non-graduating seniors
  • A cumulative GPA of 3.2 or above
  • Past Amgen Scholars are not eligible

Applications must be turned in online and will require a statement of purpose, two letters of recommendation, and an unofficial college transcript.

ACS Program In A Box 2019!


ACS Program In A Box 2019!

This year's theme for the American Chemical Society's Program In A Box was Marvelous Metals organometallic chemistry! ACS invited two experts in organometallic chemistry, Professor Vy Maria Dong and Professor Thomas J. Meade, to discuss their research and answer questions during the live broadcast.

Professor Vy Maria Dong is a professor in UC Irvine that researches organometallic chemistry. Professor Dong discussed the importance of transition metals in organic chemistry and the types of reactions that make them useful. Examples of how transition metals are important in organic chemistry include palladium cross-coupling, stereo chemistry, and polymerization.

Professor Thomas J. Meade does research using molecular imaging at Northwestern Chemistry of Life Processes Institute. Professor Meade describes molecular imaging as the ability to visualize and investigate complex biochemical processes in their natural environment. This includes injected imaging agents, x-ray, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, and nuclear imaging.

The American Chemical Society has an annual event in which each university participates online in a live interactive video broadcast featuring presentations and Q&A with experts in organometallic chemistry.

This year, Professor Vy Maria Dong will discuss the importance of organic chemistry processes to the industries that power modern society and how she is using metals to create improved reagents, catalysts, and strategies for a more sustainable and greener future. Additionally, Professor Thomas J. Meade will define molecular imaging, what it can currently do in the clinic, and how his “bioactivated” or “conditionally activated” probes could revolutionize how we diagnose and even treat patients during the diagnostic phase.

A Visit with Harry Gray

Our department seminar speaker, Dr. Harry Gray from CalTech, designated time in his schedule to meet with CSUN undergraduate and graduate students on Monday, February 18, 2019.


We had impressive turnout for the event with 2 undergraduates and 11 graduate students. Joining us were 3 faculty and 1 staff member. In total, 7 of the attendees are members of the American Chemical Society. The visit was held in our chemistry conference room, EH 2102B betweeen 2 and 3pm. His demeanor was jovial and warm, creating an intimate space for connecting with students.

Dr. Gray began by acknowledging that courses in general and organic chemistry can be dull for students. He told us about how he tried to reform the curriculum to make it more exciting and applied by dividing it into three topics: Structure, Dynamics, and Synthesis. However it was in his words a "Big failure!" There was (and is) nothing wrong with the curriculum, it's fine the way it is.

The best way to learn chemistry is to get involved with undergraduate research, the earlier the better. Doing research creates a "need to know." That need makes the coursework more relevant. In his experience, the 21st century belongs to chemistry. Chemists don't have to feel like "second-rate" physicists anymore, the problems of today need knowledge of chemical principles. Batteries!

He encourages all faculty to recruit and encourage undergraduates to pursue a chemistry major and to get involved in a research group. "If we don't get them, they will go to computer science or worse... machine learning," he quipped. The hot topics of today are: Energy, Environment, and Health. All of these three topics rely on a good understanding of chemistry.

Dr. Gray leads a movement called the "solar army" which is testing novel metal oxides for their properties in energy collection. He noted that the cost of photovoltaics from China has come down so greatly that in the future we will all have "free electrons." Getting our energy from fossil fuel will be unnecessary, leaving petroleum and natural gas as precursors for synthesis of organic compounds.

A research roundtable ensued with Dr. Gray asking the young investigators questions about their project such as: What's your wavelength? Quantum yield? Laser color? Pulse energy? Pulse width? It was exciting to see the students thinking on their feet and learning that an expert in the field is interested in the details of their work. 

He encouraged everyone write it up -- publish their results! In his words: "If you can't write, you can't talk. You're going nowhere. You can't do it enough. No one can teach you how to write. Stick with it. Don't get discouraged. You're going to make mistakes. Write too much. You've just got to do it."

On a more serious note, Dr. Gray advised students to "Really pay attention to safety. It's dangerous. You can hurt yourself. You can hurt others. Scaling up. Go over it with someone. Do you have a lab coat? Do you wear it? If not, better rethink that."

He invited us to visit his Molecular Observatory. They have a facility that does X-ray diffraction, NMR, MS. Dr. Mike Kaiser, CSUN's Instrument Manager, asked a question about nanoscale phenomena. Small molecules to materials. But what's between? Dr. Gray answered "Reactions require cavities." In the future people will be answering the question: What hybrid materials are needed? Surfaces coated with large biomolecules. 3D cavities. Organic-inorganic hybrid spaces.


Towards the end of our time together, Dr. Gray told a story about himself as an 11-year old in rural Kentucky growing up on a farm. He impersonated an adult and was able to obtain acids from a chemical company by mail order. He had quite a lab for a child. He remembers the first time he synthesized a compound: Prussian Blue. It's partly why he became interested in inorganic chemistry.

In conclusion, he left us with the inspirational knowledge that sunlight-driven electrocatalysis has already outpaced fossil fuel in terms of cost. Right now, the cost of solar energy is 4-5 cents per kilowatt-hour, whereas natural gas costs 6 cents per kilowatt-hour. We want to thank Dr. Gray for valuing the students at CSUN for the brilliant and promising scientists they are.

iHeart Science Day 2019



Dear Chem Club Members and friends,

Did you know our club was chartered in 1968? That means we've existed at CSUN for 50 years! I'm excited to be planning events for 2019, named the "International Year of the Periodic Table." It has been 150 years since Mendeleev organized the elements into columns and rows.

We have been building our CSUN Chem Club membership through "meet the clubs" and also word of mouth, but we still get inquiries such as: What is your club all about? How often do you meet? and What do you do? So here's a highlight video showing just a small slice of what our club has been up to in the past couple of years.


One big event that we have coming up is "iHeart Science Day" where 120 sixth-grade students from Patrick Henry Middle School come to CSUN for the morning. We could use 20+ volunteers to ensure that the kids have a safe and fun experience on our campus. ACS recognizes CSUN CHEM CLUB again!

For the second year in a row, our ACS Student Chapter has been recognized with an Honorable Mention. We were also awarded a green chemistry award for our I'm Going to College Day #2 program on FRI, APR 27, 2018 using the Chemists Celebrate Earth Week (CCEW) edition of Celebrating Chemistry.

The activity we did with kids is green chemistry because when we were working on the “Oil Spill!” activity (page 9), we measured what material was the best at cleaning up an environmental disaster. The fabrics tested were natural (cotton, linen) and synthetic (nylon, rayon, polyester). This is green chemistry because we should consider the entire energy burden to produce the materials used for remediation. Cotton and linen require energy for cultivation, harvesting and processing into fiber. The polymers (nylon, rayon and polyester) require energy for synthesis and processing into fiber. A discussion on the merits and drawbacks to different materials balanced with the materials’ abilities to absorb spilled oil in simulated ocean water is definitely a topic under the umbrella of green chemistry.

Vanessa's Aha! Moment

As a child, I remember playing with how-to science kits and models of the different systems in our body. I had always been curious as to why humans behave the way that we do and the science behind some of our natural body processes. I think the kits were my parents way of getting me to stop asking “why” all the time and for them to get educated as well. During my AP psychology class in high school, there was a “Neuroscience” unit and a lot of my childhood questions soon became answered. I had learned that our brains are wired differently, our memories and our environment greatly influence the substance in our brains, and most importantly, neuroscience would not be what it is today if it were not for all the advances made in other sciences like chemistry, biology, and psychology. I knew that if my dream was to become a neurologist, I would have had to master the basics in every science subject in order to fully understand how powerful our brains truly are.


Sanda's Aha! Moment


Growing up I never thought I would be as involved with science as I am today. My mentality when it came to science was that I couldn't do it because it was too hard. When I decided I wanted to be a veterinarian I had no choice other than conquer my fears. I ended up learning that science isn't hard, it just takes time and effort to understand and be able to put everything into one big picture. Once I learned that, I learned how to get through any struggle that came my way. Now here I am in my last semester before graduating with a degree in Biochemistry, looking forward to applying to vet school and becoming a DVM.

Fiorella's Aha! Moment

Through my high school career, I never enjoyed subjects such as history and english. But when it came to science and math, I loved it. I took Biology, Chemistry, and Calculus. Chemistry stuck out the most to me. My high school chemistry teacher influenced me to be a science major. As I made my way through university, my Chemistry 100 professor really showed me how amazing and beautiful the subject is. Although many aspects of chemistry are difficult, the labs for the classes really make everything worth it. One thing that I have learned from taking difficult chemistry classes is to be persistent and do what you love. I look forward to what the future has in store for me.

Khadija's Aha! Moment

I am relentlessly pursuing a degree in biochemistry because of my high school teachers. As cliche as it sounds, my high school chemistry and biology teachers had the magic to keep me engaged and interested in the respective topics no matter how difficult they became. When the time came to pick a major; I chose biochemistry because it was a combination of my favorite subjects. Biochemistry is an extremely complex subject that painstakingly explains how biological systems work.

Like most decisions I make; I was not absolutely sure if I had chosen the right major. There have been a few moments that reassured me.

The first was when I finally understood my research. Research is such an impactful learning tool because it takes in class lessons and applies them to a scientific issue. It challenges you to think critically. Practically you are getting to use all that information you've been gathering; it gives a purpose to all that biology and chemistry in my head.

The other significant moment was when we covered hemoglobin in class. It is hard to not be in awe at the intricacy of the simple act of breathing after learning it. Don't even get me started on glycolysis and the TCA cycle.

The conclusion from this should be, whatever you end up choosing to do with your life; make sure it captivates you and you'll have fun.

Brandon's Aha! Moment

I’m a senior at CSUN majoring in chemistry and looking back, I have to say that I was first introduced to chemistry back in high school. I knew that I was always interested in science, but my high school chemistry class was definitely one of the first stepping stones that lead me to where I am today. Over the course of that first year learning chemistry, the concepts were just “clicking” for me and I knew that I definitely wanted to pursue this path to see where it ended up. I followed up with chemistry classes in college and I was fascinated with all the different types of chemistry fields out there. Organic, inorganic, analytical, synthetic, and others got me excited to see what options there were out there for me. To this day, I’m still excited to see where chemistry takes me!

Club members Andrew Zlatkin and Khadija Moctar will attend the 256th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society (ACS) in Boston, MA from August 19th to August 23rd, 2018. Khadija is a Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement (RISE) scholar at CSUN. Andrew has recently transferred to CSUN from Pierce College.

CSUN’s ACS Student Chapter was honored at the 255th ACS National Meeting in New Orleans, LA. We were among the 139 honorable mention chapters (3rd place) in 2016-2017. There were 435 chapters in total; 52 outstanding (1st place), and 114 commendable (2nd place). You can see our award in the display case on 3rd floor of Citrus Hall.

Khadija and Andrew will be sharing what we do at a poster session titled "Successful Student Chapters." The ACS National Meeting draws over 15,000 chemists and chemistry students. The American Chemical Society is the world’s largest scientific society with nearly 157,000 members. 

Our ACS Student Chapter received a $300 National Meeting Travel Grant from the ACS to help defray travel costs for Andrew and Khadija. We are planning other fundraising activities, as well as applying for funds from CSUN's Student Travel & Academic Research (STAR) program.

Each CSUN student pays the $90 Associated Students (AS) fee every semester. Fifty cents of that fee is put in the STAR, totaling approximately $200,000 for the academic year. Examples of covered expenditures include conference registration fees, airfare, hotel and ground transportation.

Students must submit proof (invitation or receipt) that he or she will be presenting or speaking at the conference. Currently enrolled students may submit requests for STAR funding throughout the academic year at least one month in advance. New funding for is available starting July 1, 2018. STAR funding is available on a first-come, first served basis.

The CSUN Chemistry & Biochemistry Club hosted 7 service events (sharing chemistry with over 200 elementary, middle and high school children), 9 professional development events (with a combined total of over 160 attendees), and 3 chapter development events in the 2017-2018 school year. This is what Khadija and Andrew will be sharing with other ACS Student Chapters at the National Meeting next month.

Chem Club Hosts Second Q&A Session For Department Seminar Speaker At CSUN

Deepali Bhandari came to CSU Northridge from CSU Long Beach to give her research seminar on February 28, 2018. She was kind enough to set aside 30 minutes for students to interact with her to learn a little bit about her research field and also about research as a career path.

We had a great turnout with 7 undergraduate students, 1 graduate student, 1 staff member, and 1 faculty member from CSUN. We sat around the table in the Chemistry & Biochemistry conference room EH 2102B. After a round of introductions, where each student shared their major and who (if anyone) they were doing research with. Then Deepali told us more about her career.

She was educated in India, completing her undergraduate and Master's degree in microbiology by the time she was 22 years old. The system in India requires that students choose in the 10th grade whether they want to do down a medical path or a non-medical path (leading to engineering).

Deepali found her first job in industry through her department chair. The company was looking to start a lab from scratch. Her advisor was the only molecular biologist in her department. She had experience with thermostable restriction enzymes and the company wanted her to design a DNA ladder, as well as easy kits (like Qiagen MiniPrep) for RNA purification.

When she arrived at the company, she was given a completely empty room and she was able to choose all the equipment, reagents, and coworkers (she interviewed candidates and built her team). Another aspect of her job was to be a liason to her former university. She was tasked with arranging the curriculum and instructional labs, which fostered a love of teaching. This motivated her to go back to school after working in industry for 2 years, because she needed a PhD to teach at university.

She studied molecular biology at Loyola University in Chicago, which took her 5 years to complete. For her post-doc she came to University of California San Diego, for another 5 years. During that time she studied cellular traffic in both yeast and cancer cells. She became interested in how cancer cells survive lack of oxygen and lack of nutrients. Healthy cells undergo programmed cell death under the same conditions. This is termed ER stress which arises in misfolded proteins.


One question that came from the students was, "Why do a PhD?" Deepali explained how her PhD experience taught her resiliency in the face of months of failure in the lab. She now has a poster hanging up in her lab that encourages her students to be persistent when faced with adversity.

A special thanks goes out to everyone who helped make this a great "Student Time" with the speaker. The next outside speaker is Dr Gregory Fu from Caltech who will be visiting CSUN on Wednesday, April 4th.

American Chemical Society award!

The Chemistry & Biochemistry Club at CSUN was chartered on December 17, 1968. The leadership has changed hands many times since that date.

Dr. Kayla A. Kaiser became the advisor in Summer 2013 and aimed to reinstate the club as a Student Chapter of the American Chemical Society (ACS), but first we had to regain university standing here at CSUN.

That first year 2013-14, we did 4 outreach events and held 2 social events.

Our constitution was updated Oct. 19, 2013 by Christine Dimirjian, at the time she was serving as graduate student senator of the CSUN Associated Students (AS). Christine is now a Ph.D. Candidate at University of California, Davis.

The second year 2014-15, we did 1 professional development program, 3 outreach events, and 2 social events.

Our constitution was accepted by the Matador Involvement Center (MIC) on March 9, 2015 thanks to Kimberly Madhwani, who had experience serving as a senator for CSUN AS. Kimberly is now a PhD student at University of Wisconsin-Madison.

We grew our membership as a club in good standing with the university, participating in Meet the Clubs for the first time under my direction. The third year 2015-16, we did 5 outreach events and 1 social event.

We started using social media, including twitter and facebook, in addition to keeping a Moodle page to keep our growing membership informed of upcoming events. Before switching to Canvas, our Moodle page had 327 enrolled users.

Ravinder Abrol was added as a co-advisor in August 2016. He brought fresh enthusiasm for mentoring students to pursue careers in chemistry. Ravi and Kayla both share experiences having been members of an ACS student chapter as undergraduates, and we both agreed that being a part of an active ACS student chapter was a formative experience for us.

In 2016-17, our club received two honors at the MIC Clubs & Organizations Awards Ceremony. That year, we did 4 outreach events. Our club organized a STEM mixer for 18 science-related clubs. We held 4 professional development events. We hosted 2 social events. We got club t-shirts.



The first award was for Creative Marketing, for our use of the hashtag #MemeMonday and for sharing chemistry-related images on Instagram and our other social media platforms. The second award was for Outstanding Organization. That year’s success was a result of leadership from Angela Cannata who is currently a MARC U*STAR Scholar here at CSUN.

On January 23, 2017 our club was reactivated as an ACS student chapter. For reporting on our activities for that date forward to the end of the spring 2017 semester, we were awarded an Honorable Mention award. CSUN’s chapter will be honored at the 255th ACS National Meeting in New Orleans, LA.

Our current president, Fiorella Betdashtoo is doing a fantastic job so far this year. We’ve done our annual Fall hands-on chemistry program at the Valley Academy of Arts & Sciences (outreach), the club has hosted a research panel (professional development) and we’ve just had our end-of-year potluck (social event) and pizza party (fundraiser).

I wish I could mention every single one of our dedicated student members, they are the true stars of this story!
